Speaking of con artists, this will become much more common as the world economies deteriorate. I've bumped into a few myself. On the internet common traits of con artists are, people requesting personal information (phone, address, first and last name, social security/govt ID, bank account numbers etc.), and people offering products and services that are reported on http://www.ripoffreport.com (please check this site before making purchases or buying services on the internet by companies you are unsure about).
===============================================================================
On the street you will find more people requesting money and giving long winded sad stories such as, running out of gas w/ wife and children in the car, being an army veteran and having extreme financial difficulty etc. If they are a veteran you can request military ID (all military personnel will have one. Look at what they are wearing and think about their story. If they are out of gas and need a quick fix of money they should have friends to call, suggest a store that may have a phone. I don't give such people money unless they are genuinely homeless.
===============================================================================
Students beware of Internet colleges/degrees. AIU/Colorado Tech has been scamming many students or future students looking for an education. I am sure there will be many more paper mill colleges and schools popping up either on the internet or in your town or city. If they do not have a campus, if they are not brick and morter then don't give them your time. Nobody recognizes an internet degree. I think your cheapest alternative college will be city community college (mine is only 4,000/year in tuition).
