Head scarves on the catwalk (A post for GIRLS ONLY)

Sorry I had to delete the other post but too many guys decided to ignore my little 'girls only' post (if you want to read it you can go to my blog). Here's another extract from www.stylecovered.com

Hijab on the catwalk

Islamic Influence at (from left) Paul Smith 2, Ralph Lauren 2 and Danielle Scutt 1. Images: style.com

As you may already know designers from Paul Smith to Ralph Lauren have taken more than a little Islamic inspiration in their latest collections. Head wraps were a key trend this season and looking very chic but not exactly Islamic. OK, so their hair was sticking out but you can definitely get inspiration from them or at least take pride in the fact that (for this season at least) you’re a trend setter.

Me and My Headscarf

Since becoming Muslim nearly four years ago I tried a lot of different headscarf styles. I’m definitely not an expert and I’m sure I’ve got it very wrong on some occasions! I guess it’s a similar thing to they ways I used to style my hair before I was Muslim, you go through phases and get used to the way you look in a particular style. But as long as I’m wearing my scarf, there’s no such thing as a bad hijab day!

What’s your style?

There are many ways to wear hijab and I want to hear about them, so give me your comments or send in photos (hana@stylecovered.com) and we’ll see if we can’t show these designers how its really done.

Let me know what you think!

Taken from www.stylecovered.com

MAYBE I SHOULD CLARIFY A FEW THINGS because some people are blowing this way out of proportion.  I wrote the post because I had read a quote by Paul Smith (the design on the left) in which he was talking about his inspiration coming from the Orientalist exhibition at the Tate Britain- "The use of the headscarves and shawls was inspired by the paintings and drawings I saw". So I was just highlighting the fact that this and other designers had been inspired by Islamic themes this season, it interested me because I have a background in fashion.

The second bit 'Me and my hijab' was about my own experience wearing hijab and how much I love wearing it even though it's not always easy!

Lastly, I won't tell others how to wear hijab because it's not my place, I only want to support and encourage sisters and for them to have a 'safe' place to share tips and stories about it.

Especially because being in a western country you get so many nasty looks from strangers (as if you are guilty of something), and it wears you down.  Unless a man wears a thorbe and has a big beard he will not know what these things feel like; How it feels to have your headscarf ripped off in public, or to be sworn at and humiliated in the street and have no one defend you. So just have a little respect for us because it takes a strong woman to wear hijab no matter how she wears it.

I've changed the word hijab to headscarf where it may have caused confusion linguistically to some members.

IF YOU WANT TO COMMENT PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU'VE READ THE WHOLE POST FIRST : )

Think of things at a different angle....these are on the runways of NON MUSLIM peoples fashion....reverts come to Islam because of different things and ways. Some come to islam to marry a husband....some come to Islam because they fall in love with the religion (like myself...it was muslimah rights that attracted me to Islam) Only Allah can know that if these (ok not 100% islamic) sort of inspired from hijab look may develop a young womans desire to learn more about Hijab...more about Islam...and then cause her to revert to Islam. Allah ALWAYS turns bad things into good. Lets try to look from a angle that will bless the Ummah....make the ummah stronger.....and help sisters with their deen.

Assalamu alaykum sis. I read your blog before...and your forum....and your updated blog. Your intentions were good my dear sis and Allah saw your intentions. There will be forever some muslims that think they know better then you....or try to cause you to stop doing your work that you are doing for the ummah...cos maybe they just don't like to see muslimah being strong women with a brain and can think for themselves...and also they seem to be allergic to change. As a muslimah in a western country that wears hijab....we adapt today's fashions and do our best to be creative and make the style our own and as islamic dress code as possible, and also with what we feel comfortable and pretty in. If that is dressing with layers or something else....the sky is the limit. As long as you are modestly dressed and feel good within your own heart that's what matters. Keep up the great work...keep staying strong and have a wonderful day.

If anyone was unsure about what I meant please read the bit in red. I hope that makes it a bit clearer, I meant no harm.
P.S. I'm not a man hater, my lovely husband has supported me with my blog from day one, I'm sure your intentions are good!

then check out the definition of stereotyping. and also hijab. at least you'll learn something. but i think you are ignorant. sorry for saying that but it's not an abuse. i am talking what i read and understood. you didn't state i am male and you are female. you are still not clear what you are talking about! you are talking like radical feminists. you wrote: "If you didnt know...which since you are not a women you probably dont." it means you can't know that if you are not a woman. this is kind of sexist and stereotyping. "men can't know if they are not woman." and you said you won't post here anymore but after five minutes out of patience you posted again. :) wow. and btw this is a good site. you are still keep going with stereotypes. you can't judge a site or this site with one or few person's acts and then giving immediate conclusion that it's bad. if criticizing mistakes and then finding resistance on the mistakes and blindly insisting on ignorance and criticizing these things mean breaking the peace down, then it's your misconception! "Filled with people who are dealing with problems as others are dealing. Not with people who make the problems for others." yeah, there was an cognitive and semantic problem in the usage of terminology of hijab and i simply criticized it and you became the lawyer of misusing of this concept and insisted on ignorance. that's the corruption of peace. (sorry for being rude but facts have rude faces most of the time.)
