Sorry I had to delete the other post but too many guys decided to ignore my little 'girls only' post (if you want to read it you can go to my blog). Here's another extract from www.stylecovered.com
Islamic Influence at (from left) Paul Smith 2, Ralph Lauren 2 and Danielle Scutt 1. Images: style.com
As you may already know designers from Paul Smith to Ralph Lauren have taken more than a little Islamic inspiration in their latest collections. Head wraps were a key trend this season and looking very chic but not exactly Islamic. OK, so their hair was sticking out but you can definitely get inspiration from them or at least take pride in the fact that (for this season at least) you’re a trend setter.
Me and My Headscarf
Since becoming Muslim nearly four years ago I tried a lot of different headscarf styles. I’m definitely not an expert and I’m sure I’ve got it very wrong on some occasions! I guess it’s a similar thing to they ways I used to style my hair before I was Muslim, you go through phases and get used to the way you look in a particular style. But as long as I’m wearing my scarf, there’s no such thing as a bad hijab day!
What’s your style?
There are many ways to wear hijab and I want to hear about them, so give me your comments or send in photos (hana@stylecovered.com) and we’ll see if we can’t show these designers how its really done.
Let me know what you think!
Taken from www.stylecovered.com
MAYBE I SHOULD CLARIFY A FEW THINGS because some people are blowing
this way out of proportion. I wrote the post because I had read a
quote by Paul Smith (the design on the left) in which he was talking
about his inspiration coming from the Orientalist exhibition at the
Tate Britain- "The use of the headscarves and shawls was inspired by
the paintings and drawings I saw". So I was just highlighting the fact
that this and other designers had been inspired by Islamic themes this
season, it interested me because I have a background in fashion.
The
second bit 'Me and my hijab' was about my own experience wearing hijab
and how much I love wearing it even though it's not always easy!
Lastly, I won't tell others how to wear hijab because it's not my place, I only want to support and encourage sisters and for them to have a 'safe' place to share tips and stories about it.
Especially because being in a western country you get so many nasty looks from strangers (as if you are guilty of something), and it wears you down. Unless a man wears a thorbe and has a big beard he will not know what these things feel like; How it feels to have your headscarf ripped off in public, or to be sworn at and humiliated in the street and have no one defend you. So just have a little respect for us because it takes a strong woman to wear hijab no matter how she wears it.
I've changed the word hijab to headscarf where it may have caused confusion linguistically to some members.
