Shaykh Hamza Yusuf on hijab

“In Medina there were women walking around bare breasted! This is a historical fact.
there were uncovered women in Medina because the slaves were not allowed to cover! So Muslims should get out of this obsession with women! It’s a sickness in our own hearts. Just lower your gaze! We’re living in a society where people are walking around naked and we’re worried about a girl not wearing a scarf on her head…
A lot of men make it a hijab between a woman and her iman. Not all of you are acting like Sahaba! Why do we want our women to be like Sahabeyat?! I challenge you to put on a robe or a turban for one day! The reason why a lot of women are leaving Islam is because we’re chasing them out of Islam! We should know the time we’re living in!”

Shaykh Hamza Yusuf

Allahu Akbar the Shaykh is so right_May Allah ta ala Preserve the Shaykh 2 continue 2 benefit the Ummah. Ameen_A lot of brothers dont even choose 2 dress as a Muslim in public, so they blend in w/the non-Muslims; yet the Woman who fall short in their obligatory test they dont find excuses 4 them_There is definitely sickness in the hearts of many of us men when it comes 2 the woman. We need 2 nicely encourage them instead of chasing them out of the Deen like the Shaykh said. Allah moost'an_ALLAH HELP US ALL. AMEEN

Now I have watched the video.

Where do I begin? Firstly, I am a new Muslim in Scotland. I have been a Muslim now for around two weeks and I wear a head piece that is Muslim. I have not been victimised nor are any of my brothers or sisters in what is meant to be one of the worlds worst racially abusive countries in the world (Britain).

Secondly, Muslim women do not feel bad because of hijab. It is ordained by Allah himself and it teaches that all those who disobey Allah will be purified for eternity in the fires of hell.

Thirdly, O ye of lttle faith, complain about your hijab and cry and then take it off. Now ye of strong faith care not about any criticism that MIGHT come your way, because you know that it is a test from Allah of your faith. Is your faith STRONG or WEAK? Only Allah knows and will judge accordingly.

Brothers and sisters in Islam, I say not weather the Shaykh is right or wrong, look to your Qur'an and the Sunnah for there you will find the true guidance. There is also guidance in Gospels and the Torah, but care must be taken since we know they have been tampered with. Only Allah and his messengers can be taken for granted. All people academics or otherwise must be taken with great care and caution.

Assalamu Alaikum,

I notice you are a Shaykh. Interesting because I see you are blind and leading the blind.

You ought to know that the Qur'an is the infinate word of Allah and he knows best. All Muslims that follow the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah can never go wrong or be led down the path to hellfire with shaiytan for company in the hereafter. Open your eyes and submit to Allah and plead that he forgive you. When you do this Allah will be pleased with you and let your heart open so that you can be guided down the righteous path. Until them Hamza, Allah will never let your heart open and cause you to be in constant blindness until that very great and horrible day, the day of resurrection when we each will be judged accordingly.

Hijab is to protect woman and identifed them as muslima. that is stated in Quran. no mater when the time we'r living in, the reason why woman should wear hijab is the same. But i do agree with you in one point. we judge woman alot, not wearing hijab means dont have iman. It is very wrong and cornered the not yet hijab woman, instead to wearing it, they are afraid of it.

I felt it long time ago before i wore hijab, shy n not being welcomed were often came when i went to masjid because sometime i saw the look of the hijab woman (not all) when they saw me. felt like being underestimated. So as i said ... encourage them but not judging them.

wow those people were sick...forcing girls to uncover...shameful indeed...if true. I think Sheik Hamza is getting confused...men's urbans and robes are not mandatory. besides that was the usual dress at the time. The hijab is quite different: it is mandatory and women did not wear it before Islam. If women do not want to wear it, we cannot force them. However, since fathers love their daughters and want to avoid them being objectified, they wish for them to have this protection.

This is how i felt was the main points of what he said.

I feel what he meant to say is that if the women are not covered we need to encourage them support them, advise them.

The men especially have a great responsibility too to behave modestly respect the women more behave more like the sahaba.Make the women feel that sense of honour and value that Islam offers. The men have a great responsibility to lower their gaze even if the women is not covered. You are protecting not only yourself but the woman too by averting your gaze you are respecting the woman you are letting her feel the high esteem Islam has to offer if you do it in the proper manner.

You should have compassion and mercy for the sisters.Honour them and deffend them.Hejabi or non hejabi and by doing this you are actually setting a good example especially to non hejabis and non muslims and encouraging infact inspiring her to wear the hejab, she feels valued and worthy of the honour and dignity hejab has to offer. It is through your example you will encourage her please brothers. So check yourselves please.

Dont be so quick to judge the guy nobody has the right except Allah!Brother Hamza Yusef may be right he may be wrong, he may also be taken out of context. He is a man he isn't perfect and neither are we, so why dont we listen to what he says an then see ok we agree or we disagree. But seems people so quick to condemn the guy.People so quick to say bad things about this and that person but if u dont agree theres a better way to disagree but not go attacking the person this is a big problem! If you feel he is unqualified then please go and learn yourself an be a good example.Because attacking the brother you're actually harming your own self.He is our brother in Islam! We dont know his intention only Allah knows ok . Salams

Wow when was this statement made? Hamza Yusuf seems to have changed a lot in his approach. We are not concerned if the kuffar are walking around naked (although it is a sad state today). We are concerned with preserving Allah's deen and HIS hukm, for both men and women. Our standard for normal is not which society we live in. Rather it should be the Quran and Sunnah. We should be worried if women are not covering up themselves. We should also be worried if men are mistreating their wives. And we should be worried if a muslim is not praying. These are all concerns for our ummah. We should be good companions to our fellow muslim brothers and sisters. If we want jannah, then we should desire it for them as well. Therefore, we should work to improve ourselves along with educating others and worrying if our fellow brother or sister picks up a habit which is not from Islam. Let's not use the actions of the kuffar to be our yardstick. We already have our guidance and it is not this sinful society.
