I wrote a letter to the editor and it got published...I am so freaking out!!! I am worried someone is going to see it and be angery about it...please tell me what you think!!! aaaaaarg *freaksout*
I was not going to comment about the Abercrombie and Fitch discrimination controversy. However, after reading Allen Clary’s comment in “Scarf strikes again” (Aug. 8) I have a few things to say.First, Clary states, “Somehow I find it highly improbable that a trained manager would tell someone that they are not being hired because of religious practices.”
Having been in the working world for quite a few years, I can tell you “trained managers” are quite capable of doing unethical things.
Second, I really don’t get why people are so hung up on a piece of fabric. Why does an extra piece of clothing on someone else’s body turn people into rude, crude and hateful beasts?
No one sneers at the girl wearing a sweater or a long skirt but, when you throw a head scarf on suddenly she’s a threat to culture and national security.
Third, I fail to understand why a young Muslim lady would choose to seek employment with this company.
Everything about that company is contrary to the modesty and dignity that is central to Islam.
Lastly, retailers have got to realize the Muslim community is growing daily. Muslims are typically highly educated, and therefore, have more money to spend.
Sure, having some girl in a scarf may frighten away a bigot or two, but it will inspire an afluent, and growing customer base to spend money in their stores.
good article, i got one published in my local paper as well. but i don't agree with your bit on "why would a muslimah want to work here anyway?"
"get up stand up, stand up for your right. get up stand up, don't give up the fight!"
