Assalamu aleikum
Now you’re all probably wondering about the headline… I’m coming to that, but if you’ve ever been reading these silly markings I call a blog, you have probably noticed that I never make any points till towards the end.
I hope Eid was fine for all of you. Here it was pretty much the usual; prayer, eating out, party the next day. Our small ummah has taken some traditions of it’s own (as our local eat-as-much-as-u-want pizzeria has probably noticed). One of them is a party for women and children, usually taking place after the first Eid day. We don’t , unfortunately, have an islamic center yet. So every year we have to rent a place.
And every year people bring food. Being good muslims (krhm. Please don’t take me for an example of my ummah) we sahre the leftovers; so every year people get something to take home. This year a friend of mine was lucky enough to recieve a plateful of Moroccan cookies (and good cookies they were too. yummy *wipes keyboard*) . She was very pleased since a realtive of her husband’s was visiting them for Ramadan; it’s always nice to bring something for those who don’t get to go to the party.
So, she takes the cookies at home and presents them to her husband and the other dude and they’re like ”cookiiiiiz great!” and start eating. Now after a while the husband comes back into the room holding a cookie shaped like a star ( yes you see where i’m getting at now dont u) with a very grave expression on his face and goes ” are you sure you knew all the people who were there? Were they all muslims?” My friend, a bit confused and tells her husband that she had indeed known most people there and yes they were all muslims. The husband then goes on askin her did she know the person who had made the cookies and was she a muslim . My friend said yes to both of the questions. The the husband pulls out this star-shaped cookie and goes” look at this! this is the star of David! it’sa jewish cookie! Subhanallaah! we can’t eat these! What kind of muslims are these people here?” etc. The other dude nods and tells my friend to throw all the cookies away ”they might even be poisoned.” He said.
Now… Y’all think we might be a bit paranoid? How many times, when people glance at you on the street you just know it must be because you’re a muslim? How many times have you felt that the person walking behind you is actually following you? A lot of people take anything for racism, when sometimes people just might be curious or better yet, going the same way. ” Yeah I got an F but that’s only because the teacher don’t like me cos I’m wearing hijab” , ”They made my kid go to psychologist, I’m sure it has something to do with her parents being muslims”, ” Yeah I kicked the guys butt, he deserved some kickin cos he said my sawlar makes me look like i’m wearing pajamas” Yeah. ”They’re listening to everything we say, did you hear that? I heard some voices… Are you sure we’re here all alone?”
I’ve been searched many times on airports, and most probably it has been because I wear hijab. (I don’t look suspicious otherwise… No I don’t! ) I’ve been questioned by my classmates and teachers because of my religion. Every difficulty in my life is due to my religion. Potential husbands see that I’m a finnish muslim and apprently the text ”passport” appears on my forhead. Finnish people look at me and the word seems to change into ”poor ignorant woman” . But you see…
Muslims are probably the most self-victimizing group of people there is. I used to think it was the Jews but then I ran into these oh-poor-me-im-so-opressed-cant-get-a-job-cos-my-name’s-abdulla-not-that-ive-tried-since-i-have-no-education-and-its-all-haram-anyway-this-kafir-country-sucks-but-i-cant-move-coz-the-benefits-r-so-good-now-look-at-me-being-mashallaah-muslims. Everything is a conspiracy and who’s behind every single misfortune in your life? YEI you got it right on the first guess! Why should WE take any responsibility? Let’s blame it on the jews! What a brilliant idea! I feel so light-hearted now! Exept…
Muslims are not all that innocent either. Just look at the so called muslims countries: (if you’re one of those people who are eagerly plannign to make hijra to one of these,im sorry in advance) there are countries where there’s sharia, oh sorry, I meant of course a semisharia, since it only affects the poor people. Countries where women are not allowed to drive and yet they can have non-mahram drivers. Countries that suck up the west so much that you’re actually arrested if you want to go to the mosque because you just might be a terrorist . Let’s not even go to the ”muslim” countries who say that a)wearing hijab is forbidden b)wearing hijab is oldfashioned and doesnt need to be practised c)it’s ok to drink if you don’t get drunk d)it’s ok to smoke weed cos it’s not mentioned in the Quran e) it’s ok to keep several wifes even tho you can’t provide since, hey, i’ve read two verses of the Quran and grown a beard so now i’m a big imam cmon kiss my hand. etc.
Ín order to make better dawa to the people we live amongst, shouldn’t we get rid of our demons and start looking into our selves before we think the worst for everybody else? Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do when you’re a muslim? Besides, sometimes they do search you for looking suspicious (hijabi or not), sometimes you DO just get an F coz of being a lazy bugger, and NO you don’t go around beating other kids because tehy dissagree with your sense of fashion. I’ve noticed that the more open you are about your religion, both in terms or practice and discussion, the more the people seem to accept.
Sometimes, get this, sometimes a cookie is jsut a cookie.
wa aleikum salam wa rahmato Allah

You are so right Sister! So now I'm hungry for cookies >_>"I’ve noticed that the more open you are about your religion, both in terms or practice and discussion, the more the people seem to accept."
Well put sis, just last week I had a semi-argument with my brother in-law (it’s always the in-laws right) about the fact that my nephew (14yrs) keeps getting told off at school and its all down to one particular teacher and it’s because she is Jewish and his surname is Hassan. When I pointed out the fact that my nephew had two home works outstanding he ignored me and continued on how ‘they’ were taking over and it’s their mission to make our life as difficult as possible. Some people find it extremely difficult to look inwards and their action for why things go wrong and so they take the easy ways out which is to blame other for their mishaps.
Bismillah hir Rahmanir Rahim,Sister! You crack me up! That's excellent talk. I might have to marry you except you live 500 miles away and I promised myself I would never do the computer dating thing again. Subhan Allah.Well if you havent finished the cookies post one to me or at least take a photo of one and put it on your page. Mighty fine biscuits - brings out the imam in a person . Very nice.P.s. do you take coffee or tea with your biscuits? Im a sort of tea person myself (it's an Irish thing). I wonder what Jewish people drink with their Star-of-David-shaped biscuits, and should we avoid that too???? Maybe I should talk to an imam for a fatwa on that one!!!!! . The Muslim world has an answer for everything mundane, didn't you know.......?Wasallam,Br. AbdulHamid.
